Music Leadership

Joe Cerutti, Jr.

Artistic Director

Joe Cerutti has served as Artistic Director of the Alexandria A Cappella Collective since 2007, leading the organization through one of the most significant periods of growth and transformation in its history. Under his leadership, the organization evolved from a single traditional ensemble into a multi-ensemble community choral arts organization focused on musical excellence, accessibility, education, and community connection. Today, the organization serves singers across generations and experience levels through a growing family of performing ensembles and educational initiatives.

In addition to his work with the Collective, Joe serves as Music Director of the Alexandria Singers since 2025 and as a full-time staff member of the Barbershop Harmony Society since 2013. As Director of Philanthropy for BHS, he leads fundraising strategy, donor engagement, and sustainability efforts for one of the world's largest vocal music organizations. Over more than two decades of experience in leadership roles, he has contributed extensively to youth outreach, educational programming, volunteer engagement, and organizational strategy at both local and international levels. In 2024, he was named the recipient of the Joe Liles Lifetime Achievement Award, one of the Barbershop Harmony Society's highest honors.

As a conductor, educator and clinician, Joe has collaborated with artists and organizations throughout the United States and internationally, with appearances and productions spanning venues such as Carnegie Hall, the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. He conducted the choral preparations for the D.C. premiere of Andrew Lippa's I Am Anne Hutchinson/I Am Harvey Milk with the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Kristin Chenoweth, as well as the world premiere of Jeremy Schonfeld's Iron and Coal – Survivor and Son, a contemporary masterwork based on the memoirs of the composer's father surviving Auschwitz at age ten.

Joe has served as a judge, faculty member, and clinician for choral festivals, educational programs, and conductor roundtables across North America, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand. His consulting work focuses on organizational sustainability, volunteer culture, community engagement, and helping arts organizations evolve without losing their artistic identity.

He is a lifetime member of the Barbershop Harmony Society, a charter member of the National Collegiate Choral Organization, and maintains professional memberships with the National Association for Music Education, Chorus America, and the American Choral Directors Association, where he previously served on the National Standing Committee for Advocacy and Collaboration.
